Review:

Obviously I had a lot of hype going into this movie. It was shot by one of the most iconic cinematographers of my time. And I can assure you the filming and angles are beautiful and nothing like you’ve seen in previous Jesus movies. The plot was an ingenious idea, and something that I was very excited to watch. The film felt very indie, which was super cool, but then had the downside of being extremely pointless/boring at several points. Another white guy playing Jesus did semi frustrate me, but once I got over that and Ewan’s british accent I enjoyed how Ewan portrayed the humanity of Christ. But then…it went way overboard. To me, this films portrays Jesus as this puny little guy who knows less about His own Father than Satan. It bothered me and still does when I think back on it. Jesus is way too small and the devil is way too legit. So, to Ewan’s credit, I think he nailed the devil and that the lines given to the devil were spot on. It’s strange how they didn’t incorporate a single line from what we know occurred in the wilderness (the devil’s temptations and Christ’s denial of each using Scripture). I think they really missed it there and the film will suffer from Christian moviegoers because of this. Nevertheless, there are some major sweet moments. I’ll never forget the devil explaining what it’s like to be in God’s presence - WOW. The analogy to father and son probably goes too far for me. The ending with the modern day people at the same site is both cool and totally weird and unnecessary. Overall, I was hoping for more, but the film certainly made me think of Christ and what He may have gone through in new ways.
